As Sky Ride prepares to come to Birmingham this Sunday, Sky and British Cycling’s series of free, women only local cycling events taking place in and around the Birmingham area are going from strength to strength.

Supported by British Cycling and Birmingham City Council, the led rides are designed to encourage more women to join Britain’s growing ranks of female cyclists. The rides take place at areas of local interest and beauty, and are scheduled to run on week nights and over the weekend throughout September and October.

Trained female cycle leaders from British Cycling will guide small groups on routes taking in everything from historic sites, such as Shakespeare’s birthplace in Stratford-upon-Avon, to stunning local spots, such as Sandwell Valley. With a range of levels, aimed at everyone from those looking to get fit to more experienced riders, there will be something for everyone.

All participants will be given a hi-visibility vest for the ride.

These led rides are part of a series of Sky Ride cycling activities taking place in Birmingham this summer, that will reach its highlight this weekend when the mass participation Sky Ride Birmingham event takes place on Sunday. Sky Ride Birmingham will see some of the city’s central roads traffic-free to allow friends and families to enjoy a day of traffic-free cycling.

Birmingham Sky Ride Local Women Only highlights include:

Chocolate Trail, 15 September – One for the chocolate lover! This 6.3 mile route takes you through some of the most beautiful parks in Birmingham en route to Bournville, the chocolate capital of England! With a mixture of traffic free paths, canal towpaths and minor suburban roads, this ride has a relaxed, friendly feel.

Tolkien Trail, 26 September – This 7 mile ride celebrates some of Britain's literary greats. Visit Sarehole Mill, the childhood haunt of celebrated author JRR Tolkien. This and other local settings such as the Moseley Bog provided inspiration for 'Hobbitton' and 'The Shire' in his books - 'The Hobbit' and 'Lord of the Rings'. Stratford-upon-Avon the home of Shakespeare is the next stop as the ride meanders along the River Cole and local canal. This is a fantastic educational bike ride which showcases the cultural importance of the West Midlands.
