a more unusual request here lol... and more vague lol...

Im after a Thomas Wootton, also seen as wooton,wotton... with a nickname "Shog" or "Shogg" apparently he was the leader of "the most desperate gang in the country who make there headquarters in Birmingham"

He was charged in 1857 at derby assizes for burglary at the home of reverend joseph nodder in chester (a distant cousin of mine was there too, and had to lower herself out of the bedroom window and flee for help)

Thomas was charged for 25 years "beyond the sea" to freemantle prison australia... but apparently... it looks like he had been transported (dont know where too) before, and had come back and done it again lol His convict papers say he had a previous conviction

I know he was aquitted 15th October 1839 for another crime of larceny in Derbyshire I dont know if that would be his previous conviction, as he was aquitted? but im dying to find out more about this gang and of thomas and what he got up to lol and, where he ended up!

I've just subscribed to the 1911 census website. When I find the census I want, I pay my 30 credits for the original page which then comes up on the screen. I click on 'file'...then...'print preview' which brings up 3 pages to print - 2 with unecessary stuff I don't want. I've clicked on 'print' (bottom left), with the same result. All I want is a full size A4 copy of the census. Can anyone help take me through the process? Please make it simple! Thank you... Florence

Family lore has it that my grandfather, Ernest Albert Cale (1892-1947), was a professional boxer who fought in the US under the name "Kid Daly". The story goes that he won his fight(s) in the US and came home with enough money to buy his mother (maiden name = Charlotte Bishop) a sweet shop.

We have one photo of him, and he certainly had a boxer's build! He served in WW1 in the Royal Field Artillery as a bombadier (war service 1915-18). He was married in 1917 to Elsie Woodall. In his non-military career, he was a waterproof paper maker. Both he and Elsie lived their whole lives in Ladywood and Winson Green, Birmingham. I have not been able to find any information about his boxing career and can't confirm whether there is any truth in the stories of his boxing bouts abroad.

Can anyone help with suggestions of places to look for information about Ernie Cale's supposed career as a boxer?

Many thanks -
Michelle Cale

:explode:
The birth certificate for William Ward shows him to be the son of Thomas Ward & Alice Ward (nee Smith) born 4th December 1894 ~ the family lived at 14 Liverpool Street, Deritend in the Aston parish of Birmingham.
I have found his baptism record ~ William was baptised at St Basil's Church on 15th April 1896 but this entry shows his birth date incorrectly as 23rd November 1894.
He was a brass bedstead worker (as were many other of the Ward family) until he enlisted with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers & served in WWI at the Somme where he was gassed rendering him unfit for further service & was discharged from the army on 2/8/1917. The home address quoted on his war records at the time of his discharge was 64 Herbert Road, Small Heath, Birmingham which was the home of his father Thomas Ward.
Amongst his army records is a postal slip dated 1921 which shows that his medals were posted to him from an army depot in Nottingham ~ they were sent to 64 Herbert Road, Small Heath, Birmingham & the signature is in the name William Ward. This made me wonder in which years he appeared at that address in the electoral registers ~ I thought that his disappearance from there might provide me with a time period to check for both a possible death or marriage entry or might have shown him living there with a wife in order to learn her name. Sadly, this approach proved fruitless as William Ward didn't appear in the registers at his father's house.
I am all out of ideas now as to how to track down what became of William ~ with it being a common name there are so many entries of that name in the marriage & death registers so I have no idea which to look into.
Can anyone offer me any suggestions of something that I have not thought of which might help me to find my William please? Any help at all would be most grateful.
Thank you,

Brock.

Hello everyone .This is my first post here …….sorry if its in the wrong section

I am the grand daughter of Mr and Mr Ernest Nicholls who till 1954 lived in George Street next to the West Bromwich springs. My Granddad worked there for over 48 years.

My aunt and uncle ran the Ironmonger 'Bagnalls' on Walsall Street all there lifes.

Does anybody know anything of the ‘Lambeth’ family who lived at 102 George Street. Sadly the houses are long gone now
I am currently tracing my family tree and am totally stuck, as I can find no legal reference to any of my maternal grandmothers side.(darlaston family line)

Here some facts and info that hopefully may jog someone’s memory.

I’m looking for Sylvia Lambeth (nee Darlaston)
She was married to Joseph Lambeth (a moulder by trade)
They had around 10 children (Joe, Abraham, Edith, Sylvia, Florrie, Elizebeth, Billy Jack)
She died of TB at a young age probably around 1934

Also…..Does anyone have any memories of ‘Bagnalls‘ the shop and house were sadly demolished following my uncles death.
How very sad it feels to know how such a wonderful part of my history has vanished.

I am struggling to find details of my ancestor William Fenton (b. 1858) who is listed as being an inmate of All Saints Prison (presumably Winson Green) in the 1891 Census. He was at Wormwood Scrubs in the 1881 Census.

Obviously, to have been in prison for so long, the crime committed would have been fairly serious even in the late Victorian era. I have tried to access the National Archives but found the site incredibly confusing and not at all user-friendly.

Can anyone help? My ancestor was born in West Bromwich and I have no idea where the crime was committed or what the crime was

I used to write to her in 1958 as a penfriend but in the late 60's I moved house and we lost touch, sadly.
In clearing out some old boxes I came across a couple of old letters and it arroused my curiosity as to how she and her family are today.
I think we have all been there, where life has got in the way and only when we are much older do we have the time to "wonder what happened to..........."

For others, you may like to note that the current Sept issue of the BBC "Who Do You Think You Are?" magazine comes with a free CD which this month includes Photoscape software. It seems reasonably powerful including removing blemishes (clone stamping), cleaning, sharpening, lighting etc + the magazine includes a step-by-step guide if you are new to the subject. Alternatively it is downloadable here http://www.photoscape.org/ps/main/index.php
